House Passes Rep. Sessions’ Traumatic Brain Injury Treatment Bill Including Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Thursday, May 5th, 2011

U.S. Congressman Pete Sessions secured unanimous House approval of his legislation to expedite new and innovative treatments, not currently available within military and veteran medical facilities, to our nations’ veterans and active duty soldiers suffering from Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI). Originally introduced in February as the TBI Treatment Act (H.R. 4568), Sessions’ TBI treatment expansion initiative was adopted as an amendment to the Department of Defense authorization bill.

Under the legislation, physicians may voluntarily treat soldiers and veterans with TBI using any government-approved treatments to stimulate neurons throughout the brain to regain function, including but not limited to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), flash doses of approved drugs, and small devices that operate like brain pacemakers. Using these and other treatments in the private sector, a multitude of evidence from numerous cases shows substantial progress in brain function and personality in TBI patients, leading to promising treatment options for injured troops.  (To read article in full, click here.)

TBI Treatment Act Introduced to House of Representatives – Latest Action

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011

Bill #396 – the TBI Treatment Act, was introduced to the House of Representatives during the 112th Congress (2011-2012) on January 24, 2011.  The latest action reported on the bill is its referral (on February 4, 2011) to the Subcommittee on Military Personnel.

The bill is sponsored by Representative Peter Sessions (R-TX) and co-sponsored by Representatives William Pascrell (D-NJ) and Todd Platts (R-PA).  After its introduction,  the bill was referred to the Committee on Armed Services and the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

H.R. 396 TBI Treatment Act – Directs the Secretaries of Defense (DOD) and Veterans Affairs (Secretaries) to carry out a five-year pilot program under which each Secretary establishes a process for providing payments to facilities for treatments of traumatic brain injury (TBI) or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) to private  facilities other than Department of Veterans Affairs medical locations.

The promising use of HBOT is on the horizon for treatment and rehabilitation of our wounded warriors – U.S. military personnel exposed to IED blasts causing  TBI (traumatic brain injury), post concussive syndrome and PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder). Head injuries are considered to be the signature injury to soldiers serving in the war on Iraq.
